Despite what some people think, designing an accessible course for individuals with disabilities doesn’t have to be confusing or intimidating! And your accessible courses don’t have to be boring and ugly. In this hands-on program, you’ll learn to build accessible courses you’re proud of.

Whether your goal is to be compliant with ADA and Section 508 laws or you simply want to apply the WCAG 2.0 accessibility standards to be more inclusive, there’s a lot to know and a lot to do. This course will walk you step-by-step through the important decisions you need to make and the steps you need to take. You’ll walk away with more confidence in your ability to build the most accessible courses possible in Articulate Storyline.

Do you find yourself thinking any of these things?

  • I want to do the right thing.
  • I want to comply with the law.
  • I’m doing a few things, but I’m not sure it’s enough.
  • I have no idea if what I’m doing is actually working.
  •  I feel like I can’t do anything interesting in an accessible course.
  •  I don’t even know where to start.

If so, this is the course for you!

This course does assume you have a working knowledge of Articulate Storyline (how to add slides, images, audio, quiz questions, simple triggers, etc.).

“I had spent a lot of time researching accessibility, concerned I was missing details that could frustrate learners and create risk for my clients. I felt I could trust the information Diane shared vs. the unvetted online sources I’d been relying on. And getting expert guidance was much more time effective than trying to solve it myself through trial-and-error. I’m now more confident I have the knowledge I need and can translate that knowledge to action. I feel re-invigorated and relieved to have a roadmap to follow.”

Accessibility program outline

In this program, you’ll learn both the design strategies as well as the step-by-step procedures needed to ensure that the course is accessible for individuals with visual, auditory, and motor impairments.

Specifically, you’ll learn how to:

  • Interpret the WCAG 2.0 AA standards as they relate to a Storyline course.
  • Navigate a course with the keyboard.
  • Navigate a course with a screen reader.
  • Write and add helpful alt text for images.
  • Set up logical tab order.
  • Use colors that provide adequate color contrast.
  • Use best practices to create closed captions.
  • Manage synchronized media such as video, animations, and elements timed to audio.
  • Create interactions that are robust and accessible.
  • Determine which Storyline features can and can’t be used in an accessible course.
  • Add usability enhancements.
  • Configure the player.
  • Evaluate a course for compliance issues.

What you’ll need:

  • A working knowledge of Articulate Storyline.
  • Computer with Articulate Storyline 360 installed (trial version OK). NOTE: The course is designed around Storyline 360 version 3.48 or later. Keep in mind there is no Mac version of Storyline. If you are a Mac user, you’ll need to use some sort of Windows virtual environment, such as Parallels.
  • Screen reader software is highly recommended. If you don’t already have one, you can use NVDA. It is free software, but we recommend making a donation when you download it.
  • If you would benefit from any special accommodation, please contact us at
