Authoring Tool Comparison – Updated!

Well, we knew we’d have to keep our authoring tool comparison grid updated as the market changes, but we didn’t think it would be outdated within a week!

Last week, Adobe announced the release of Adobe Captivate 5.5. Changes that affect our comparison include the ability to publish to mobile friendly devices (including Apple iOS) and some new graphics features such as the ability to create gradients and rotate shapes. These graphics features made us realize that the ability to create graphics within the tool is an important factor, so we added it to the chart.

In addition, we’ve had great discussions with some of you about the rankings we gave for certain features. As such, we’ve promoted a few of the other scores for Captivate, such as complex branching, course interface, and customized navigation.

Hopefully this version of the grid will last longer than a week!  As before, we’d love to hear your comments.

The other thing I like about Captivate 5.5 that didn’t fit anywhere on the chart is the new subscription option. If a contractor needs to work on a short-term project, they can “rent” the software for $59 per month.

  • Where’s SmartBuilder? It really need to be included there.

  • Very useful – thanks! The fact you updated this so quickly gives it credibility.

  • Do you have new authoring tool comparison that includes Captivate 6?
